No new measures to combat ESBL chicken bacteria

The health ministry has no plans to take extra steps to combat the ESBL ‘chicken bacteria’ which scientists believe led to the death of an 85-year-old woman last week.

The woman died of a complicated urinary tract infection but the bacteria, which is resistant to antibiotics, was found in her system.
The ministry said households should be extra alert when it comes to kitchen hygiene and make sure chicken products are thoroughly cooked.
Microbiologist Maruine Leverstein- Van Hall, who broke the news of the woman’s death at a congress on Friday, said 95% of shop chicken is infected with the bacteria.
Even though the woman who died was old, she was not part of the at-risk group, Leverstein-Van Hall said.
