MPs halt Schiphol airport expansion over noise plans

MPs have halted transport ministry plans to expand Schiphol airport by refusing to back the implementation of a new noise monitoring system, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.

While caretaker transport minister Camiel Eurlings had expected parliament to give the green light to the new noise system, MPs have decided to declare it controversial, meaning the issue will be up to the next government.
The new way of monitoring noise pollution from the airport had been expected to clear the way for a 25% expansion in aircraft movements.
The Netherlands has had a caretaker cabinet since the government collapsed at the end of February. This means it is not allowed to take any decisions considered controversial.
The Telegraaf says although a majority of MPs back the new system, they are likely to want a fundamental debate on the airport’s plans with the new cabinet before agreeing to it.
