Kidnapped Australian boy at centre of ground-breaking legal deal

The Dutch and Australian authorities are working on a deal which could mean the mother of of an abducted Australian boy, arrested in Amsterdam last week, could avoid jail, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The paper says legal experts are working on a new system to resolve international custody battles, which means the mother avoids criminal charges.
Andrew Thompson, who is now six, was taken by his mother during a custody hearing in Australian.
In addition, it is now likely that the boy’s father will need to remain in the Netherlands for at least three months as custodial orders from Australia are translated into Dutch and given effect in the local courts, the paper says.
