Teenager to start solo sailing trip from Portugal
Laura Dekker, the 14-year-old girl who hopes to become the youngest person to sail solo round the world, plans to leave for Portugal with her father on Wednesday.
After sailing to the Atlantic coast with her father, Dekker will then start her solo trip, according the girl’s weblog.
Last week, judges in Middelburg ruled that she should no longer be under court protection, clearing the way for the two-year voyage to begin. Dekker will not make the journey non-stop.
She was made a ward of court last year when judges said the trip would be too dangerous and a risk to her emotional and social development.
