Heavy rain causes problems in central belt
Heavy rain caused problems in many parts of the country on Thursday with localised flooding and road closures.
Normally some 60 mm of rain falls in August but that has fallen in just a few hours, a spokesman for the KNMI weather bureau told Nos tv.
In particular the central part of the country – Gelderland, Overijssel, Noord and Zuid-Holland – were affected by the rain.
In Amsterdam and Utrecht, the fire brigade was called to deal with dozens of flooded cellars and problems on the roads. In Gouda, a tunnel by the station was flooded and trees were blown down in Zoetermeer and Scheveningen, Nos said.
The Herman Renz circus has been forced to move to a new location near Lelystad and tonight’s performance has been cancelled after its existing location turned into a mud pool.
