In some central parts of the country, up to 275 mm of rain fell. In Lievelde, Gelderland, 138 mm of rain was recorded in the space of just 24 hours.
With an average temperature of 16.8 Celsius, August was slightly cooler than normal. In total, there were 165 hours of sunshine, compared with an average of 198 hours, the KNMI said.
But lots of sunshine in June and July means the summer was actually sunnier than normal, with 630 hours of sun, compared with 591 in an average year.
