Disappointment drips off the Dutch newspaper front pages on Monday after Oranje’s World Cup final defeat at the hands of Spain.

The Volkskrant’s entire front page is a photograph of a distraught looking Wesley Sneijder in profile above the headline ‘weer niet’ (again no). The Netherlands also lost the final in 1974 and 1978.
The AD takes the same photo with the caption ‘Nederland huilt’ (the Netherlands weeps).
De Pers also focuses in on Sneijder.. ‘Neederland, oh Neederland’ is its headline. ‘Three minutes too long,’ the paper continues, referring to the winning Spanish goal just minutes before the end of extra time.
Lions
The Telegraaf tries to salvage some Dutch pride. The headline reads ‘they fought like lions’.
And Nos tv reports that the players will get a full-blown welcome, including a boat trip around Amsterdam, when their success is celebrated in the capital on Tuesday.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to welcome the team back on Tuesday. The squad will first head up a boat procession through the city before being presented to the crowds on Museumplein.
Money
The Parool points out that the Netherlands gets to divide up €19m for coming second while Spain takes home a Fifa cheque for almost €24m.
But unlike in other countries, the KNVB football association will not say how much each player will get. Some unconfirmed reports put the bonus at €200,000.
Dirty
On its website, the Volkskrant refers to the storm of criticism directed at the Dutch team from the foreign press for playing dirty.
‘Was it really so bad?’ the website asks, linking to a collection of photographs showing the worst of the Dutch tackles.
And legendary Dutch player Johan Cruijff tells a Spanish newspaper the Dutch played ‘hard and rough’. ‘The Netherlands played well for 20 minutes and then switched over to kicking and provocation.’
