Will he stay or go? Still no clarity on Jol’s position at Ajax
There is a growing feeling within Amsterdam football club Ajax that coach Martin Jol may move to England’s Fulham, despite his insistence earlier this week he wants to stay, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.
Although Jol has been told he can buy a cheap striker to replace departed players, the club’s supervisory board is ‘jumping on the brakes’, the paper says. Stock-exchange listed Ajax booked a loss of €21m in its 2009/10 financial year.
Jol told the paper Wednesday is crunch day for the new season. ‘It is a question of negotiating. I am first going to try to complete the squad. We have lost a lot of players and there is interest in a number of others,’ he said. ‘I have not given an ultimatum but it is pretty obvious I do not want this uncertainty to continue for another week.’
Champions League
Ajax has a crucial Champions League qualifier against PAOK of Greece next week.
‘I am worried about the future,’ Jol told the Telegraaf after Tuesday night’s 7-0 warm up victory over amateur side Rijnsburgse boys. ‘But the club has these worries as well.’
According to the Sun newspaper, Fulham has sent chief executive Alistair Mackintosh to Amsterdam to negotiate Jol’s release. But the paper says Ajax has so far refused to even discuss the subject of compensation to cancel the remaining two years on Jol’s contract.
