Trafigura boss may still face prosecution over Probo Koala
The chief executive of oil trader Trafigura may still face prosecution for his company’s role in the Probo Koala toxic waste scandal, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.
The high court has ordered Amsterdam appeal court to again look at whether Claude Dauphin can be charged over events in the summer of 2006.
The Probo Koala, chartered by Trafigura, was in Amsterdam in early July to have the waste in its tanks processed but left after a dispute over the price. On August 19, the waste was dumped in Ivory Coast by an unqualified local firm, reportedly causing thousands of people to become ill.
Dauphin earlier successfully appealed against prosecution, saying he only became aware of what the ship was carrying in mid August. That ruling led the public prosecution department to appeal again to the high court.
Trafigura is currently being prosecuted for breaking Dutch environmental rules alongside city council officials, waste disposal contractor APS and the captain of the Probo Koala.
