The Netherlands celebrates reaching the final into the small hours

Celebrations following the Netherlands’ 3-2 victory over Uruguay in the World Cup semi finals went on into the small hours of Wednesday morning.

Some 9.5 million people watched the match on tv, just over half the population.
There was little trouble reported, although riot police were brought in after disturbances in the Jonckbloetplein area of The Hague. In total, 18 people were arrested for causing trouble, including throwing fireworks and stones at police, Nos tv reported.
There were also disturbances involving several hundred youths in the Frisian town of Drachten.
Big screen
In Amsterdam, some 40,000 people watched the match on a big screen at the city’s Museumplein.

In Rotterdam, hundreds of people celebrated the win on the Stadhuisplein, where three giant screens had been set up.
In Utrecht, people jumped into the canals and climbed lampposts to celebrate, De Pers reports. In Roermond, on the German border, there were shouts about revenge on the Pruusse. Germany beat the Netherlands in the World Cup final in 1974.
Headlines
The win dominates the front pages. ‘The final’ says the Telegraaf in giant orange letters. ‘The Netherlands scents World Cup gold’.
‘After 32 years, the Netherlands is in the final’ is the Volkskrant’s headline, over a huge picture of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as he realises he has scored and put Oranje into the lead.
‘That’s how you do it,’ states De Pers, above a photo of coach Bert van Marwijk with one hand in the air giving instructions. ‘For the first time in a long time, the Dutch squad has been a team. No fighting, no whining millionaires, no red cards. Nothing. A team.’
