Storm kills one, injures 8 on campsite, caravans blown into lake
One woman was killed and eight people injured when Wednesday evening’s storm tore through a campsite in Gelderland province, tossing caravans into a nearby lake.
Six of the eight are in hospital and three are in intensive care, but are not said to have life-threatening conditions, the Volkskrant reported on Thursday morning.
The De Kemperplas campsite had 85 visitors at the time the storm struck.
Gale force winds also brought down five electricity pylons in the area.
The storm, which hit the east of the country, led to a number of injuries in Limburg. One car driver was hit by lightning and at least nine other people were hit by falling roof tiles and masonry.
The A73 between Maasbracht and Nijmegen was closed for a time in both directions following sudden cloudbursts.
Some 40,000 households in the south and east of Nijmegen were left without electricity because of the storm.
