Storm damage mounts up
The storm which hit eastern parts of the Netherlands on Wednesday evening caused damage put at between €50m and €75m, the insurers association told Nos tv on Thursday.
Insurance group Interpolis says it has had 3,000 claims for damages so far, largely for flooding and electrical equipment which has been damaged by lightning strikes.
Most of the damage was caused in Gelderland province, where one woman was killed after the storm lifted caravans from a campsite and dumped them in a lake. Three people are still being treated in intensive care.
Electricity
Five 40-metre high electricity pylons were also blown down. ‘I’ve never heard of one pylon being blown over, let alone six,’ a spokesman told Nos.
The town of Deurne in Brabant was also particularly hard hit. Between 500 and 1,000 trees were blown down and a number of households are still without water.
The storm on Monday caused damage of between €30m and €50m.
