So close, but it’s not third time lucky
The Dutch football team will arrive back in the Netherlands on Monday afternoon, after losing the World Cup final 1-0 to Spain in extra time.
‘It is a crying shame but losing is part of the game,’ Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk told reporters after the match.
The Dutch coach was unhappy with the first half but said the Dutch team came back in the second. ‘Spain had the most chances, but Arjen Robben was twice close to a goal for us. Then we could have been world champions.’
‘It is so disappointing. I am devasted, so angry,’ said defender Dirk Kuijt after the match. ‘We were so close to the World Cup.’
‘Such a shame that we could not score a goal and break the game open,’ said Dutch captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who is retiring from international football.
Crown prince Willem-Alexander, who watched the game sitting next to Spain’s queen Sophia said: ‘Such a shame. It might not have been the most beautiful match, but it was exciting.’
Success
Nevertheless, the success of the Dutch squad, which reached its third World Cup final, will be celebrated in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder was recognised as the second best player of the tournament on the Fifa website, behind Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.
Sneijder also takes the bronze boot for scoring five goals during the tournament. The winner was Germany’s midfielder Thomas Muller, who also scored five goals but had three assists to his name.
