A ‘very major’ fire broke out in the historic waterfront of former fishing village Volendam on Thursday morning. The harbour and a number of shops have been evacuated and the situation is ‘very hectic’, a fire brigade spokesman told news agency ANP.

The fire is thought to have started in a souvenir shop next to the Spaander Hotel but spread quickly to a fishmongers and a snack bar. It was put out in the early afternoon.
The fire is not far from the bar where 14 youngsters died in a fire on New Year’s Eve ten years ago.
