The police and other investigation authorities are still breaking privacy rules by asking telecoms companies for information about their customers despite being given several warnings, according to internet privacy lobby group Bits of Freedom.

The organisation says justice ministry figures show investigators often don’t have the authority to ask for such information and that no-one checks if they are authorised.
In addition, investigators often transfer such information between the various organisations, even though this is strictly forbidden.
Investigators request information about email addresses, IP addresses, phone numbers and names some three million times a year, Bits of Freedom claims.
