Heathland fire flares up again

Fire on heathland near Heeze south of Eindhoven flared up again on Monday despite hopes it had been put out at the weekend.

But the A67, partly closed for a time on Sunday because of the smoke, remains open for motorists, news agency ANP reported.
The fire has so far destroyed an area of some 200 hectares. On Sunday 400 fire officers and around 100 soldiers were involved in trying to put it out.
Around 80 fire officers and 100 soldiers are involved in Monday’s efforts, a spokesman told the AD. The fire is particularly difficult to put out because in places it is burning underground at a depth of up to half a metre.
