The five state-owned official bodies with licences to run gambling in the Netherlands last year netted a total €2.5bn, up 1.5% on 2008, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

Spending on lotteries was up 8% while scratch cards generated an extra 12%.
But Holland Casino which runs casino operations and horse racing betting company Runnerz both saw their turnover go down. In particular, the ban on smoking has hit casino operations, the paper said.
