The Dutch organisation which helps holidaymakers who get into trouble abroad has warned about excessive drinking by youngsters who are away without parents, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

Last year the organisation helped over 1,000 youngsters aged 15 to 25 who needed medical attention and some 30% of them came from the resort of Chersonissos on the island of Crete. Most of those cases involved alcohol.
‘The figures for Chersonissos are alarming,’ Eurocross worker Daphne de Wit told the paper. ‘It is a trend we have noticed over the past two years. At the height of the season last year we were dealing with 30 cases a day.’
Accidents

Car and scooter accidents, fights, jumping off balconies and other alcohol-fueled behaviour are more common than straightforward alcohol poisioning, she said.
Recent research by the Trimbos addiction clinic shows young men drink an average 17 alcoholic drinks a day while on holiday without parents, and young girls seven, the paper says.
