Coalition talks to enter new phase – standpoint softening – next week
The negotiators working on putting together a new government hope to begin working out concrete details for a new coalition agreement next week, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.
Sources told the paper that until now the four parties – the two Liberal groups VVD and D66, Labour and the left-wing greens GroenLinks – have focused on exchanging information and asking questions.
But the talks are now reaching the point that party leaders will have to ‘actually soften their standpoints in order to reach a balance’, the paper quoted a source as saying. Negotiations can also then begin on dividing up responsibilities between eight ministries, the paper said.
Finances
On Thursday the party leaders and negotiators were joined by senior finance ministry officials for talks which focused on possible spending cuts.
And special ‘sub negotiating teams’ have been set up to look at housing, healthcare, immigration, safety, mobility, employment and democratic management, the paper said.
When talks on forming a ‘purple plus cabinet’ began two weeks ago, it was decided the new coalition agreement would be a short document outlining broad policy aims but without fine details.
