500 more die due to heat wave

Some 500 more people than average have died since June 23 because of the warm weather, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

Between June 23 and July 12, the average maximum temperature was 28 Celsius, some six degrees hotter than normal, the CBS said.
Statistics show each degree over the average leads to the death of some 30 more people a week, bringing the total over the period to around 500, the CBS calculates.
The hot weather is due to return again this week.
