Sixty-two MPs bow out

A total of 62 MPs had their final day in parliament on Wednesday after either losing their seat in last week’s general election or opting to stand down.

Among them was the longest serving MP, Bas van der Vlies, head of the fundamentalist Christian party SGP, who has been an MP since 1981.
Parliamentary chairwoman described Van der Vlies as an ‘institution’.
Health
Socialist party stalwart Jan Marijnissen has also bowed out. He led the part y for 14 years but stepped down several years ago for health reasons.
Rita Verdonk, the former VVD MP who left after a leadership battle with Mark Rutte to set up her own populist group TON, lost her seat last Wednesday.
CDA parliamentary party leader Pieter van Geel is also leaving.
Benefits
Former MPs are entitled to a generous redundancy package: 80% of their salary of €7,300 a month for the first year and 70% for up to a maximum of six years – depending how long they were in parliament. If they find a new job, they are still entitled to a top-up if they earn less money.
The new-look parliament, made up of 150 MPs, will be sworn in on Thursday afternoon.
