Two second-half goals gave the Netherlands victory in their Group E match.
Just seconds into the second half, a deep cross by Robin van Persie was headed away but deflected off another Danish player’s back and beyond Thomas Sorensen for an own goal.
The second goal came from Dirk Kuyt on the rebound.
A ‘deserved three points for Netherlands, but let’s hope that is just a starter for them and not the best they can offer this World Cup because they didn’t have to be very good to beat a disappointing Denmark team today,’ BBC sports reporter Jonathan Stevenson said after the match was over.
Some 1.2 million Dutch fans had taken the day off work to watch the match. Hundreds of schools closed early.
The match was team captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s 100th cap for the Netherlands.
