After a 12-hour start, ‘purple’ coalition talks continue on Tuesday
Talks on forming a new government between the two Liberal parties VVD and D66, Labour and the left wing greens GroenLinks will continue on Tuesday following an initial round of discussions lasting nearly 12 hours on Monday.
Monday’s talks included an afternoon session with a number of leading economists to discuss economic policy.
Coen Teulings, head of the government’s macro-economic advisory unit CPB said afterwards that ‘the economic situation is very serious’ and ‘a good coalition accord is absolutely necessary’.
But the four party leaders all declined to comment on the progress they had made.
Coalition negotiator Uri Rosenthal began looking at the options for a ‘purple plus’ cabinet at the weekend after talks on a right-wing cabinet including the anti-Islam PVV collapsed last week.
The name ‘purple’ comes from the mix of party colours.
