Willem II in ‘acute financial difficulty’
Tilburg football club Willem II, which this weekend avoided relegation from the premier division, is in ‘acute financial difficulty’ and faces a cash shortage of €700,000, the club said on Monday.
‘We are almost sinking,’ crisis manager Paul Bottlier told players and club officials at a meeting on Monday afternoon, news agency ANP reported.
‘If no money is on the table within two weeks, then I cannot pay the wages or tax bill at the end of May. Then I will have to ask for court protection from creditors,’ he said.
Bottlier is pinning his hopes on a city council bail-out and is in talks with council officials, he said.
First division clubs Haarlem and Veendam have already gone bankrupt this year.
