Tilburg city council has voted in favour of reducing the bill football club Willem II pays for its stadium in an effort to help the club out of its financial difficulties.

The council has agreed to backdate the reduction to 2004, generating €2.4m for the club.
The deal means Willem II, which narrowly avoided relegation to the first division last season, will pay €900,000 a year rather than €1.3m for the stadium.
The deal involves Willem II agreeing to bring new faces onto its board, draw up a multi-year spending plan and bring player salaries in line with football association norms.
The council’s intervention will not end Willem II’s financial problems. The club has a deficit of €4.8m.
Maastricht
Earlier this month, Maastricht city council agreed to bail out troubled first division football club which is in serious financial difficulty.
The council agreed to buy the club’s stadium for €1.8m and wipe out debts of €1.7m on the condition the club appoints a new board and other creditors also wipe out their debts.
MVV is the third first division club to get into trouble this year. Haarlem and Veendam have been declared bankrupt.
