Schiphol hopes flights will resume this afternoon

Schiphol airport hopes to resume flights this afternoon, but warns it will take time before airline schedules are operating normally again.


Flights were suspended from 6am this morning due to the cloud of volcanic ash, which is moving over the continent.
But Schiphol is advising travellers to check with their airlines before coming to the airport because there will still be delays.
Rotterdam and Groningen airports are also reopening their check-in desks, Nos tv reports.
Thousands of travellers turned up at Schiphol this morning, leading to chaos and long queues, the Volkskrant.
The airport authorities were aware of the flying ban at 03.00 but could not place the news on the website until 06.00 because of a computer problem, the spokeswoman told Nos news.
