Philips Nederland: worst of the job cuts are over
Philips Nederland could be affected by a further round of efficiency measures but the worst of the job cuts have probably been made, director Harry Hendriks says in an interview with the Financieele Dagblad on Tuesday.
‘Growth is a very important end target. Perhaps the worst is behind us. We are seeing a fragile recovery,’ Hendriks told the paper.
The workforce at Philips Nederland has been halved since the arrival of CEO Gerard Kleisterlee, the paper says. The Dutch arm now has a workforce of fewer than 15,000. In 2001 it employed almost 31,000.
The Netherlands used to account for 20% of the Philips workforce but that has shrunk to 13%.
The company’s activities in the Netherlands have been affected by company-wide efficiency drives. But the switch away from traditional consumer electronics and lighting to medical and wellness equipment has also had an effect, the paper says.
