Man who caused Remembrance Day panic says sorry
The 39-year-old tramp who caused a stampede during the Remembrance Day two minutes silence in Amsterdam on Tuesday is very sorry about his actions, his lawyer told reporters on Thursday.
It was the act of a drunken man, not a planned action and with no deeper meaning, lawyer Mariƫlle van Essen said in the Parool.
‘Nor could he do anything when someone shouted ‘bomb, bomb’ and ‘suitcase’ and panic erupted. That was never his intention,’ she said.
Some 60 people were injured in the resulting stampede and several received broken bones.
Court
The man, who will appear in court on Friday, faces charges of causing severe physical harm and disturbing the peace.
Van Essen said she was angry that acting mayor Lodewijk Asscher and police chief Bernard Welten were so quick to state the suspect looked like an orthodox Jew and had a criminal record for violence, theft and drugs offences.
‘What is the relevance,’ she said. ‘My client had been arrested and the police could easily see he was disturbed.’
