Labour sharpens up its plans for the economy

Despite its election manifesto pledges, the Labour party is planning to take all the measures it can to reduce the effect of the greying population on the economy, inside sources have told the Financieele Dagblad.

The party’s manifesto only deals with €20bn of the expected €30bn treasury shortfall but insiders have told the paper Labour does plan to stimulate employment by using tax cuts as well.
That will boost the treasury by €6bn, the paper says. The other €4bn will come from cutting medical specialist and public sector manager pay, making health insurance premiums income dependent and increasing rents for high earners in public sector housing.
The paper says Labour leader Job Cohen has recommended making the changes, which will make the party less vulnerable to attacks by the Liberals and CDA. The VVD and Labour are currently in a neck and neck race in the polls.
According to the Volkskrant, Labour will publish its new plans in detail on Thursday.
