‘Kidnapped’ girl’s mother gets custody

The mother of eight-year-old Katya Leendertz, kidnapped by her father from school last year and taken to the US, has been given full custody of the girl by a court in Arnhem.

The court said the girl should stay with her mother because she has been sole carer for years.
In March, a court in the US ordered the girl be returned to the Netherlands but she is still in the US.
The disappearance of Katja Leendertz sparked a nationwide hunt. Her parents who divorced in 2007, have been embroiled in a bitter legal battle for custody.
The girl was born in the US but lived in the Netherlands with her mother who is Ukrainian.
