Home owners put pensions, health, education above mortgage tax break

A majority of home owners will accept limits to mortgage tax relief in order to prevent cuts in spending on pensions, social security benefits, healthcare, education and public safety, according to a poll of almost 120,000 members of home owners lobby group VEH.

However, the home owners would rather see cuts in spending on integration and the arts and culture than a reduction in the mortgage tax perk, the survey shows, without quoting percentages.
Home owners also want politicians to debate other issues connected to housing, such as purchase taxes, the shortage of homes for first-time buyers and waiting lists for rent controlled property.
Mortgage tax relief is a central issue in the June 9 election campaign with most parties pressing for change. Some seven out of 10 people in the VEH poll said parties’ positions on mortgage tax relief would affect the way they plan to vote.
