An alleged al-Qaeda militant arrested in Iraq has told news agency AP he had talked to friends about attacking Danish and Dutch teams at the World Cup in South Africa next month.

‘We discussed the possibility of taking revenge for the insults of the prophet by attacking Denmark and Holland,’ the man, identified as Abdullah Azam Saleh al-Qahtani told AP in an interview. ‘The goal was to attack the Danish and the Dutch teams and their fans.’
The terrorists hoped to use guns and car bombs, he said.
AP said no steps appeared to have yet been taken to put the plan into motion, such as obtaining bomb-making materials and that Al-Qahtani said the plot still needed approval from the al-Qaeda chain of command.
The Netherlands is considered to be at risk from al-Qaeda attacks because of the rise of anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders. Wilders has called for the Koran to be banned and wants to impose a tax on Islamic headscarves for ‘polluting’ the environment.
A spokesman for the Dutch foreign ministry told news agency Novum it was not aware of any plot to attack Dutch citizens in South Africa.
