D66 shows its politicial colours – new purple
D66’s preferred new coalition government would be a combination with the VVD Liberals, Labour and the left-wing greens GroenLinks, party leader Alexander Pechtold told Nos tv on Wednesday evening.
Such a coalition would be a ‘progressive, reforming’ cabinet and the ‘new purple’ Pechtold said.
Labour and the two Liberal parties VVD and D66 formed two cabinets from 1994 to 2002, both led by Wim Kok. Purple refers to the mix of colours – the red of Labour and blue of the Liberals.
Clarity for voters
Pechtold said earlier this month he backs the idea of a pre-election pact between a number of parties who pledge to work together and form a coalition in the run up to the June 9 election. This would give voters a better idea of who to support, he said.
Pechtold said the D66 coalition would make sure the VVD did not link up with the anti-immigration PVV and that Labour would avoid the ‘conservatives of the Socialist Party.
And he challenged Labour leader Job Cohen to name his preferred coalition partners.
