TV crime show defies court order, broadcasts prison footage

TV crime reporter Peter R de Vries defied a court order on Sunday night and went ahead with the broadcast of secretly recorded footage of a child sex killer in a psychiatric prison.

De Vries said the programme maker, tv channel SBS and producer Endemol were aware of the possible consequences but that broadcasting the footage was in the public interest.
‘This should be more important than the privacy of a person jailed for life for murdering children,’ SBS said in a statement.
Last Friday judges said they would fine both SBS and Endemol €15,000 if the broadcast went ahead.
Pornography
Sunday night’s show was the second in a three-part series about Koos H, who was jailed for life in the 1980s for killing three girls. The footage was taken by a childhood friend who now lives in Thailand.
Nico van Empel visited H eight times within three weeks, and gave H porn films featuring teenage girls, with full knowledge of prison staff, the show claims. H also talked to Van Empel about the murders and hinted he had information about the killing of two Swedish girls in Belgium.
Last week, justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin promised to investigate reports that H was being allowed to watch pornography.
