Police and Dutch Rail (NS) security teams were called to deal with 2,000 incidents in March this year, some 500 more than the monthly average throughout 2009, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday, quoting a confidential report.

By far the majority of incidents are connected to people travelling without a ticket and without proper identity papers, the paper said. The information comes from a report by NS security officials.
Rail unions have called for the appointment of a further 250 transport police officers in order to guarantee passenger safety.
But a spokesman for the NS told the paper there has not been an increase in aggression against its staff. ‘Since we set up a special security centre and security teams, there are a lot more requests for assistance,’ security coordinator Frank Reitsma said.
