Seven ‘Tamil Tigers’ arrested in the Netherlands
Dutch police have arrested seven people suspected of raising money for the Sri Lankan rebel group, the Tamil Tigers, the public prosection department said in a statement.
The arrests follow a wide-ranging investigation and searches of 16 homes and office premises, the department said. Police also confiscated computers, paperwork, telephones, photos and more than €40,000 in cash.
The seven arrested are suspected of raising money for the armed group by collections, selling DVDs and calendars and organising illegal lotteries, the statement said.
The Tamil Tigers have been on the EU’s official list of banned terrorist organisations since 2006.
The group has been fighting for what it called Tamil Eelam, an independent state for Tamils on the island of Sri Lanka, since the 1970s.
