Schiphol boss offers himself as cleaners´ strike mediator

The head of the Schiphol airport group Jos Nijhuis has offered to act as a mediator between private contractors and cleaning sector unions in an effort to end the long-running dispute over pay, Trouw reports on Friday.

The effect of the eight-week strike at Amsterdam´s Schiphol airport and railway stations nationwide is now clear to see, the paper says.
And Nijhuis has offered to try to bridge the gap between the two sides and says Schiphol will make its own contribution to irmproving the position of cleaners, the paper says.
The cleaning unions are calling for a 3% pay rise, travel expenses and better training. ´But most of all they want recognition. They are angry that they cannot do their job properly because of the pressure on them,´FNV union spokesman Ron Meyer told Trouw.
The employers, who have contracts with Schiphol and the NS, say they cannot increase wages because of competition in the sector.
Last month, social affairs minister Piet Hein Donner said he is ‘concerned’ about the vulnerability of contract cleaners.
