Queen to unveil monument to Queen’s Day attack dead
Queen Beatrix will on Thursday unveil a monument for the seven people killed when Karst Tates drove his car through the crowd watching the royal motorcade arrive for Queen’s Day celebrations in Apeldoorn last year.
The ceremony will be attended by relatives of those who died, other people hurt in the incident and members of the royal family who witnessed the black car scatter bodies and plough into railings. Tates himself was killed in the April 30 attack.
The monument, in the form of a box filled with seven glass balloons, symbolising vulnerabity, celebration and mourning, has been placed close to the spot where the attack took place. Later, there will be a concert in the city’s Grote Kerk.
One-off
Apeldoorn mayor Fred de Graaf has already announced the memorial service will be a one-off in agreement with the victims’ relatives, the NRC reports.
One person should not be able to determine how Queen’s Day would be celebrated for ‘days, months and years’, the paper quoted De Graaf as saying.
Last week, Tate’s insurers Reaal said it had received 118 claims for compensation and expected the total bill to reach €4.5m.
