MPs call for more say in cabinet formation

Parliament should have more say in the choice of negotiator to start forming a new coalition government after the June 9 election, the VVD Liberals and left-wing greens GroenLinks say in a joint motion to be debated by MPs.

The plan also has the support of the Labour party and may have slim majority overall, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.
In the current set up, the queen appoints a negotiatior (informateur) as soon as the election is over to start the process of putting together a coalition government. She makes the decision based on the advice of her senior advisors and political party leaders.
Prime minister
Once the informateur has done his job, the queen appoints a formateur to work out the fine print and find ministers. He is usually the next prime minister.
The VVD and GroenLinks motion would also allow parliament to make recommendations.
The Socialist Party wants the queen’s role to be removed. ‘The representatives of the people can chose their own negotiator,’ a spokesman told the Volkskrant. ‘We don’t need a non-elected head of state to do that.’
