Court rules Dutch state does not have to house refugee and child

The Dutch state can refuse to house an Angolan asylum seeker and her three children who has lost her request for asylum, judges in The Hague said on Thursday, the Volkskrant reports.

The woman had appealed against her eviction on the basis of a European Committee on Social Rights report. It said in February the Netherlands must stop evicting families with young children from asylum seekers centres because this conflicts with the European social charter and other human rights legislation.
But the court in The Hague ruled the committee’s rulings are not binding and the state does not have to house the children.
Thursday’s ruling conflicts with another one earlier this month, when judges in Utrecht said the city council must find accommodation for a rejected asylum seeker and her three-year-old child for the next six weeks.
