Civil service traffic wardens strike inThe Hague, Utrecht
Traffic wardens are on strike in support of their 1.5% pay claim in The Hague, Utrecht, Haarlem, Hoorn and Haarlemmermeer on Wednesday.
But the councils involved have warned motorists they will still have to pay parking fees because not everyone is stopping work, news agency ANP reports.
The strike is the latest in a campaign by local authority workers who have been offered a one-off bonus of 1% of their annual salary instead of a wage rise. Local councils want to freeze civil service pay, saying the recession means they cannot afford an increase.
Local authority civil servants have been without a formal pay deal for one year.
In The Hague, judges will decide on Wednesday afternoon if the planned strike by street cleaners on Thursday is illegal. Officials are worried that Queen’s Day revellers could be hurt by the rubbish left by the 200,000 people expected to turn up to a free concert on Thursday night.
