A government scheme allowing the owners of old, polluting cars to claim up to €1,000 if they hand over their vehicle to be destroyed is to end on Wednesday, the transport minister said.

The total budget of €85m has been spent, the ministry said. Some 80,000 people have taken advantage of the scheme.
