At least 3,000 people die because of their jobs, three times as many as are killed in traffic accidents, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday, quoting trade union figures.

The figures, published by the FNV trade union federation, show around 100 people are killed every year in accidents at work.
But the number of people who die because of their job is far higher, according to the work-related illnesses centre.

Chemicals

Working with chemicals and asbestos leads to 1,350 deaths, while heart disease caused by working under extreme pressure leads to a further 825. And some 570 people will die of work-related lung problems and 50 of infectious diseases picked up at work.
The centre also claims an estimated 200 unborn babies die because their parents have worked with dangerous chemicals. The at-risk group includes hairdressrs, vets, dentists and people who work in greenhouses.
The research does not include figures for people who kill themselves because of work related-bullying, the paper says.
