Amsterdam refuse collectors to strike

Amsterdam city centre refuse collectors are set to go on strike for a week from April 30, Queen’s Day, their busiest working day of the year.

The binmen are calling for a 1.5% pay rise, but have been offered a one-off bonus equivalent to 1% of their annual wage.
Last year, the Queen’s Day crowds left some 300 tonnes of waste on the capital’s streets, most of which was cleared up overnight.
The decision to strike from April 30 is in response to the ‘tough stance taken by the employers’, a union spokesman told news agency ANP.
The refuse collectors have said they will clear up the Dam square ahead of the Remembrance Day ceremony at the war memorial on May 4.
