Amsterdam in court over rubbish collectors’ strike

Amsterdam city council is going to court in an effort to get a planned strike by the city’s rubbish collectors from April 30 ruled illegal.

The council says the week-long strike will have a serious effect on health, safety and public order.
The strike means the tonnes of rubbish left behind after the Queen’s Day celebrations will not be cleared up. But it will also threaten the Liberation Day and Remembrance Day commemorations, any eventual celebration if Ajax wins the football league title or cup final, and preparations for the launch of the Giro d’italia cycle race which kicks off in the capital this year, the council says.
The unions are demanding a 1.5% pay rise.
Similar strikes are also now being planned in Utrecht and The Hague, the Volkskrant reports.
