Iceland will repay, says finance minister

Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager will outline the latest developments in the Icesave debacle to MPs on Wednesday morning, following Iceland’s overwhelming no vote to the agreed repayment scheme in a referendum at the weekend.

On Tuesday, De Jager said there is no discussion that Iceland will repay the Netherlands and Britain. The two countries lent Iceland €3.8bn to allow it to pay back savers who lost money when internet bank Icesave collapsed in 2008.
‘Iceland has enough means to pay off its debt,’ De Jager told broadcaster RTLZ.
