Green light for teenage drinking crackdown

MPs have given health minister Ab Klink the go ahead to proceed with legislation aimed at cracking down on teenage drinking, Nos tv reports.

A majority of MPs said the measures are not controversial – meaning Klink can go ahead with his plans despite the pending election.
MPs will vote on a list of over 300 issues deemed controversial on Thursday. Since the cabinet’s collapse, ministers are only supposed to act in a caretaker role and need parliament’s backing to process legislation.
The amendments to current drinking laws will give local authorities the right to increase the age limit for the sale of beer and wine from 16 to 18. The rules will also let councils clamp down on happy hours and ban young teenagers from going to bars.
