Former Labour minister rejects knighthood

Former junior economic affairs minister Frank Heemskerk has refused to accept an honour from the queen, RTL news reported at the weekend.

Ministers are traditionally given a knighthood when they leave, as long as they have been in the job for at least a year.
Labour ministers resigned en masse last month following a dispute with their coalition government partners over continuing the military mission to Afghanistan.
According to the paper, Heemskerk refused the title because doing his job ‘was honour enough’.
