Sightseers and photographers have been flocking to the IJsselmeer, a huge lake north east of Amsterdam, where ice mountains up to 6m high have formed because of the wintry weather.

The lake, which used to be part of the sea, has frozen over in parts because of the continuing low temperatures. Once the ice sheet breaks or is lifted and driven by the wind, it is pushed into piles, forming strange mountains of broken ice.
