Girls’ alcohol abuse on increase

Half of the teenagers who end up in hospital emergency departments with alcohol poisoning are girls, several newspapers write on Wednesday.

Figures from the report, commissioned by the Reinier de Graaf hospital and a consumer safety organisation, show that every year around 1,800 young people between the ages of 10 and 24 find themselves in hospital because of excessive drinking.
One in ten is younger than 15 while half are between 15 and 20.
In 2004 two out of three youngsters were boys but by 2008 half were girls.
The number of 15 to 19 year-old girls needing treatment has risen fivefold, researchers warn. Hospitals are now seeing 600 girls a year in this age bracket.
